Jerry Seinfeld's productivity secret

September 13, 2007

ChainAre you trying to develop a new habit? Maybe you want to become a better writer. Maybe you can't get into the habit of balancing your checkbook. Maybe you'd really like to play an instrument, but just don't have the attention span.

Jerry Seinfeld knows the secret, and it's simpler than you think. "He said the way to be a better comic was to create better jokes and the way to create better jokes was to write every day."

That's it? That's the secret? Well, almost. How do you get into the habit of writing every day (or whatever else it is you want to become better at)?

Get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker.
He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day. "After a few days you'll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain."
"Don't break the chain." He said again for emphasis.

Really all you need to do to develop a talent or habit is to do it. Do it every day, and don't break the chain. It's amazing what you'll be able to accomplish when you don't allow yourself to slack off.

There's even a web application that you can use to make your chain at Don't Break the Chain.

This is why we do what we do

September 12, 2007

I received a touching story from a reader yesterday. It really feels good to know our products can make a difference in people's lives. Thank you Sharon, and good luck.

I just wanted to share a story with you. Last year my ex daughter-in-law sent me a link to the Dash movie and it influenced my life. I can say influenced because I've always acted in similar ways however, it was GREAT to see that someone else is out there. I actually changed my middle name to Dash so I could consciously remember the powerful story. So since then , I get the simple truths newsletter and read it religiously. I also send the Dash link to my friends and hope it will influence them. OK, enough, now for the story.
In June, I was told I needed open heart surgery to repair a defective valve. Being a very active positive 60, I accepted the decision- of course I got second opinions- and found a group of doctors who were positive and fit my role of a great team. Your newsletters always talk about commitment, so I started meditating and working with acupuncturists so that my body and spirit would understand what was going to happen, and be receptive to the tremendous operation and the healing that would occur once it was over. I researched everything and was ready both mentally and physically. I also asked the doctor to read a healing statement in my ear immediately after the operation saying that my operation was a success and my healing would be rapid, with minimal pain and discomfort.
Well the operation was last Thursday. I found I could not take any pain medication as it made me sick, and I could only handle Tylenol every 6 hours. Not surprisingly, I experienced very little pain and came home yesterday, a day earlier than even the doctors planned.
I attribute my success to many of the tools you make available to everyone for free and I want to thank you personally for doing this. I have no doubt my healing will be rapid. I will also get a third job in addition to the second one of exercising as your newsletter advised today. I want this third job to be making more people aware of the endless possibilities of a positive mind set.
THANK YOU so much for all your good inspirational information and the sharing that you do with others.

Set the tone of your day, first thing in the morning

September 11, 2007

Did you ever notice that the way you start your day has a huge bearing on your attitude for the rest of the day? Getting up late, rushing out the door, skipping breakfast, and swearing at traffic set a terrible tone for the entire day. Lifehack posted a great article yesterday on "How to raise the odds that it's going to be a fantastic day."

It really is amazing how much better your day can go if you get up 30 minutes early. He gives some great tips in the article. My favorite:

If you aren't sure what needs to be done first, follow this simple rule of thumb: look to see whatever needs to be done next and do it. Repeat until the end of the day. the result will be faster, more secure progress than you ever believed possible.
