Using the Good Thoughts of Wise People

An excerpt from Charging the Human Battery
by Mac Anderson

A fox, a wolf, and a bear went hunting and each got a deer. A discussion followed about how they should divide the spoils.

The bear asked the wolf how he thought it should be done. The wolf answered, "That's simple. Each of us should get one deer."

As soon as the wolf finished speaking, the bear ate him.

Then the bear asked how the fox would divvy up the spoils. The fox offered his deer to the bear and suggested that he take the wolf's as well.

"Where did you get such wisdom?" asked the bear. "From the wolf," replied the fox.

Sometimes in our life, there are no substitutes for experience. The problem is we rarely have it until after we need it. The only way I know to advance the speed by which experience comes is to seek it from those who are wiser than we are.

Many years ago I heard a quote that I never forgot. It said "You'll obtain more wisdom by spending an hour with a wise person than you'll gain by reading twenty books." I'm so glad that I heard it when I was young because all my life I've made a point to meet with successful people whenever possible. In fact, there were times that I went way out of my way to create the opportunity.

The biggest difference in meeting face-to-face versus reading a book is the privilege of asking questions and hearing answers. Answers to questions that pertain to your life, your goals and your dreams can make a very powerful impact on your thinking. The other big advantage to meeting a wise person is that it could be the beginning of an ongoing relationship that will allow you to seek more wisdom in the future.
