    A 21 day life-changing experiment

    September 18, 2007 2089 Views

Scientists say it takes 21 days to form a new habit (or break an old one). Think about that. If you want to change your life, or your attitude, you can do it in 3 weeks. You just need to keep the streak up for that long.

    Complaint bracelet

It's harder than it sounds. 21 days can be a long time if you're trying to kick an old habit. So what habit are we going to try to break?

    Complaining.

You don't realize how much you complain until you make an effort to catch yourself doing it. People complain about everything- and the most trivial things. The price of gas, the phone system at work, their credit card bills, some item on the news- everyone's got something to complain about. So here's the experiment.

Stop complaining. That's it. Do it cold turkey. A group of people in Missouri even made a program out of it. You can request a purple bracelet for a small donation (to cover shipping). Why do you want a bracelet? The goal is to stop complaining for 21 days straight. Here's how it works:

    1. Put on the bracelet
    2. If you catch yourself complaining, switch it to the other hand and start over
    3. When you reach 21 days, you'll find that you're a happier, more positive person.

That's it. You're a creature of habit. If you can pick up the habit of being positive, and not complaining, the world will be that much better. Think about it on a grander scale. Over 5 million bracelets have been requested. Think about a world with 5 million fewer people complaining all the time. Why not make it 5,000,001?

CandlesHere's something to ponder while you're enjoying your weekend.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle."

    Jerry Seinfeld's productivity secret

    September 13, 2007 1615 Views

ChainAre you trying to develop a new habit? Maybe you want to become a better writer. Maybe you can't get into the habit of balancing your checkbook. Maybe you'd really like to play an instrument, but just don't have the attention span.

Jerry Seinfeld knows the secret, and it's simpler than you think. "He said the way to be a better comic was to create better jokes and the way to create better jokes was to write every day."

That's it? That's the secret? Well, almost. How do you get into the habit of writing every day (or whatever else it is you want to become better at)?

Get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker.
He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day. "After a few days you'll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain."
"Don't break the chain." He said again for emphasis.

Really all you need to do to develop a talent or habit is to do it. Do it every day, and don't break the chain. It's amazing what you'll be able to accomplish when you don't allow yourself to slack off.

There's even a web application that you can use to make your chain at Don't Break the Chain.
